This bespoke wardrobe and storage project was completed in a fourth-floor flat in Hove, on the edge of Brighton. Designed to complement the apartment’s existing character, the brief included creating a false chimney breast to anchor the room visually and blend seamlessly with the décor. Either side of the chimney breast, we installed custom-built solid oak sideboards, providing both balance and practical storage.
The oak sideboards were finished using the traditional Japanese charring technique known as Shou Sugi Ban, where the surface of the timber is carefully burned to enhance the grain and create a rich, textured appearance. This process not only delivers a striking aesthetic but also increases durability. The charred finish added depth and contrast, creating a distinctive focal point within the apartment.
Alongside the feature cabinetry, we built a bespoke open-fronted wardrobe positioned next to the chimney breast. The design included six drawers at the base, double hanging rails, and a large open section at the top, with three pocket cupboards integrated down the left-hand side for additional concealed storage. The installation was prepared for finishing and later painted in navy blue by the client’s decorator, completing the refined and contemporary look.
